The enzyme that catalyses an oxidation reduction that involves molecular oxygen is as the acceptor of electrons is known as oxidase. During the process the reaction results in the in the reduction of oxygen through water (H2O) or by Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2).
The oxidase are also said to be the subclass of oxidoreductases.

In microbiology the oxidase test is used as the phenotypic character for the identification of bacterial strains, it determines wether the bacterium in question produces the cytochrome oxidases. Bacteria's that can or have to utilize oxygen are known as aerobic bacteria or facultative.
