The word "Taiping" is of Chinese origin. In that language it refers to "peace". It is mostly often associated with the Taiping Rebellion but is also found as the name of an island that is Taiping Island, or Taiping city in Taiwan, Taiping town in Malaysia.
The Taiping rebellion that took place over a period of fifteen years in China was started or instigated by Hong and Yang Xiuquan. They were Christian mystics, one of whom Hong, declared that he was the Messiah and the younger brother of Jesus. They garnered widespread support and established the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom against the then Qing Dynasty. Nearly twenty to fifty million people are estimated to have died due to this insurrection. The imperialist finally won and put an end to a madman who on many counts had grown on many accounts more corrupt then they themselves had been.
