The word restraint is used as noun and almost always you will find that the word is being used in association with 'on somebody or something' and the term conveys the idea of a rule or fact that limits or controls what one can do. The sentence that is considered as a must to illustrate the meaning of the term is being given below: The government has imposed restraint on some products to protect the domestic industry. The abovementioned sentence says that the government has controlled the import of some products because it can hurt the industries that are making the same product here.

The word can also sometimes be used to put across the meaning or idea of a kind or type of seat-belt or safety device and the use in this context also conveys the same idea as described above to some extent.
