The word scholarly is defined as something which is characteristic of scholars or scholarship. Scholarly journals are those books that are written by experts in a subject area which caters to the needs of a specialised readership.

Scholarly journals are defined as those types of periodical which contain articles which are known as scholarly journal articles. These are written by specialists and aimed at other specialists in a particular field or discipline of academic study. An article in a scholarly journal is usually documented with footnotes and/or a bibliography. Scholarly journals are mostly published either on a monthly basis or on a quarterly basis. They contain very few (if any) advertisements and very few coloured illustrations.
