Receptacle is the inflated tip of a stem that bears the floral parts. It is the terminal portion of the flower stalk. Receptacle is a fleshy structure and serves as a support for one or more attached flowers or flowering parts. The flower or flower head is attached to the receptacle. Thus it is the axis to which the floral organs are attached and a part of the peduncle where the flower heads is borne. It is the base of the flower.

Receptacle also means an electrical outlet for a plug. It is linked to a source of power and capable to receive an insert. A typical household consists of 120 volt receptacles for plugging in appliances and 240 volt receptacles for the cooking range, clothes dryer, air conditioners, etc. these types of receptacles are known as electric receptacles.
