The word puritan is used both as a noun and as an adjective and you can use the word for a kind of person who thinks that pleasure is bad and keeps very strict moral attitudes. But the word is usually used in disapproving manner and it is not advisable for you to use it unless you have the intention to hurt people.

When you start writing the word with the letter 'P' in capital it conveys the idea of a member of a protestant group that was found in England. They existed in the16th and the 17th centuries and their motto was to worship god in a very simple manner.

If something is connected with puritan can also be known as puritan and there is no need to use any other adjective form.

There are many other words that are formed on the same root and you can find puritanical and Puritanism and all the words are to some extent convey the same idea.
