The word preface is used both as a verb and as a noun and when you are using the word as a noun it is used for the introduction to a book which usually appears at the start of the book and it explains the aim of the author for writing the book.

The word, when used as a verb, conveys the same phenomenon but in this form it says about the act of providing the preface for a book. Usually as a verb the word is associated with 'with something' and the following sentence can make the meaning of the term quite clear in this context: John prefaced the book with an account of the problems he faced while doing research for the book.

In the verb form the word can also be used for the act of telling something before you start making a speech.
