Obstacle means "a hurdle or an impediment." It can be something that comes in the way of a progress or a certain course of action, and must be surmounted or evaded. An obstacle opposes a person's aspirations and his path to progress. Synonyms of the word "obstacle" are roadblock, barricade, hurdle, impediment, blockage, hindrance, problem, clog, wall etc.

Any hurdle employed to disrupt, block or cause problems the movement of an opposing force and cause losses in terms of time, money, machinery and other supplies is called as an obstacle in military parlance. An obstacle can be man-made, natural or a combination of both. Here is an example of the word obstacle in a sentence:
Illiteracy is the biggest obstacle to the progress and prosperity of this country.
