The term macular means a spot or a blotch, especially on an individual's skin. Macular degeneration basically is a medical state in which the light sensing cells in based in the macula break down and over the period of time, stop to function.

On the basis of American Academy of Ophthalmology, it is one of the prime reasons of central vision loss in the US for those people above the age of fifty years. Where as certain macular dystrophies which affect younger persons are at times addressed as macular degeneration.

Macular degenerations which take place on the basis of age start with a typical yellow deposits in the macula known as the drusen. Generally all the individuals with these initial changes have good vision.
