The term isolated usually means separated from others. It could also be used to mean solitary or singular.

When the word isolated is used to mean 'set apart from others', a synonym for it would be the word quarantined. This term is particularly applied when separating from another substance in order to derive a pure or a free state. It is also frequently used in place of the term insulate. Other synonyms depending on the context include the terms stray, scattered, separated, disjunct, set-apart, detached, marooned, stranded, apart and obscure.

The word comes from the French term isolé; from the Italian word isolato; from the Latin term insulatus, meaning made into an island; coming from the term insula, meaning island. The noun form of the same is isolator.
