The term infantry is given to that branch of an army which is comprised of units that are trained specifically to fight on foot. In general it refers to soldiers that are both trained and armed to fight on foot. It could also broadly be used to describe a unit of such soldiers; for instance a particular regiment.

One should make a note of the fact that in history, with few exceptions; nearly all armies have primarily been developed around a nucleus of infantry. The term infantry comes from the French term infanterie; which comes from Old French; coming from the Old Italian word infanteria; coming from infante meaning youth, foot soldier; it is from the Latin term infans, meaning infant.

Infantry Online is also the name of a popular combat computer game.

Infantry means armed forces, military, troops, and battalions. It can also be used for cavalry, regiment, armored division, and cavalry. All these words are related to a different branch of the army.
