Jacitation means a false boast. It is the act of bragging about things that one hasn't done with the motive of rising in someone's eyes in reputation or respect. It is often done at the expense of others. At one point of time it formed the basis of legal petition called the 'jacitation of marriage'. Here the court could actually command the person to stop pretending to be married when they are actually not married. Tort of slander of title is a form of jacitation.

Thus it refers to the boasting by an individual that he or she has married another, from which they get the reputation of being married to each other. While it may suit one person's interest it might be harmful to the other party in such cases. Courts often in such cases entertain a libel by the party injured; and after verifying the claim and observing the evidence enjoin the wrong-doer to perpetual silence and, as a punishment, make him pay the costs.
