The word 'hydroxy' is a combination of two words hydrogen and oxygen and mostly the word is used as a prefix in the chemical nomenclature to signify the presence of hydroxyl functional group.

Such kind of groups can be found in alcohols, phenols, carboxylic acids and also as ligands in the inorganic compounds. The word can also refer to hydroxyzine which is a kind of medication that is usually sold under the brand names Atarax, Serecid, Ucerax and Vistaril. The medication is used usually as a medicine for itches, as a nausea reducing agent and also as an anxiety reducing agent. Sometimes it is used as a pre and post-operative medication also and the medicine has an analgesic effect for as long as one week.
