Puccini is an Italian last name. It is a derivative of the surname Puccio which in turn is also a pet name of the Italian first names like Fillipo and Iacopo.

The most renowned person with the surname Puccini is Giacomo Puccini. He was a composer with several operas like Tosca, Madame Butterfly and La boheme to his credit. His brilliance as a composer is reflected in the fact that the aforementioned operas are among the most frequently performed in the world.

Puccini was born in Lucca, Tuscany in Italy. He came from a musical family and was a fifth generation musician to be precise. Unfortunately his father died rather prematurely when Giacomo was just five. He subsequently lived with Fortunato Magi his uncle. Being a rather undisciplined and poor student, music soon became his sole passion. He was inspired to become a fully fledged composer after he saw a performance of Verdi's Aida.

Puccini is often considered to the rightful successor of his idol Guiseppe Verdi. He seamlessly combined both the Italian and German operatic styles.
