The word 'extravasation' is a technical term and is used mostly in the areas of pathology and geology. In pathology the word describes a phenomenon in which there is a force in flow of blood from the vessel and the blood is spread in the surrounding tissues. In geology 'extravasation' is a term that describes the event of lava extruding from the volcanic vent.

Though the word is a technical one, some people use it to describe similar phenomenon in general context also; they use it for a leakage in a container. In pathological terms too various dictionaries have their own definitions of the term. In some of the dictionaries the word is described as a process in which cancer cells exit the blood vessels or the lymphatic blood vessels.
