A farthing is defined as a former British coin. It is made of bronze. It is worth a quarter of a penny. In the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the author, J.R.R. Tolkien further sub-divided the Shire in the Middle-earth legendarium into several regions. These regions, which are the sub-divisions of the Shire in the Middle-earth legendarium, are known as farthings.

Farthing is also the name of two coins. There are references to these two coins in the New Testament of the Holy Bible. They are rendered in the Authorised Version of the New Testament by the word Quadrans (Matthew 5:26, Mark 12:42). It is a coin that was current during the time of the Lord. It was worth three-eighths of a cent. The assarion was equivalent to one-and-a-half cents (Matthew 10:29, Luke 12:6).

The most common usage of the word farthing was in the penny-farthing bike, a type of early bicycle which had a high seat, one large wheel in front and a small rear wheel.
