Istanbul comes from the Greek phrase: "εις την Πόλη" (is tin Poli), which means: To the City.
Polis was the Constantinopolis (the city of Constantinus) and it is written with a capital "P", because it was the biggest city and capital of medieval Greeks (known also as Byzantium empire)
In 1453 the Polis fell into Ottomans Turks, which they still own this city. In 1930 Mustafa Ataturk changed the name Constantinopolis to Istanbul (which was very familiar to Arabs in this way)
