The most common use of the word goodness is in spoken English and is used to express surprise. Suppose you find a balloon which is quite big and you haven't imagined it to be of that size. In that case you will certainly be surprised and in your surprise you will express yourself somewhat like this: Goodness, how big the balloon is!

The word can also be used for the quality of being good and can be used in various ways. Some of the examples are as follows: 1) The intrinsic goodness of human nature 2) Many people do not care about others but he has at least the goodness to look at me when I was talking to him.

The word is also used for the part of something that has a good effect on somebody especially on somebody's health.

The word can also be used in idiomatic form and the idiom is: out of the goodness of your heart. The idiom says about the feeling of kindness you have for somebody without thinking about your own benefits out of the act.
