Gait means the manner of walking or moving his foot. It refers to the distinctive style of using his foot which is peculiar to every person. The two basic human gaits are running and walking. Thus it is nothing but the locomotion of limbs. There are different types of gaits among humans. Some of them are crawl, march, jog, hop, skip, hobble etc. Thus it is the pattern of moving and the style of doing it.

Gait depends on factors like rhythm, footfall and speed or pace. Normal and proper gait needs the proper functioning of the nervous system and musculoskeletal system. If a person suffers from neurologic disorders then his gait is likely to be affected like in the case of Alzheimer's patients. Their gait becomes reduced as their disease advances. It means that they find that their ability to lift their feet has diminished or decreased.

It is also used to indicate the style of walking of horses. The different gaits of horses are walk, trot, canter and gallop. This indicates the different speed and style of a horse's movements.
