The hamstring is any of the tendons that are located at the rear hollow in the human knee area. It is one of the many tendons that constitute the boundaries of the space at the back of the knee.

It is also the name of a muscle located in the same region. The hamstring muscles include: the semitendinosus, the semimembranosus and the biceps femoris.

In animals, the hamstring is the term for a big-sized tendon that is located in the back of the hock.

Cutting of a hamstring of a person or even an animal would cripple that particular organism.

Hamstring is also used as a verb which means to hamper or ruin the effectiveness of something. For example, "the good magazines are often hamstrung by uncreative formats".
