Coin cobs are a type of currency which was minted at the Mexico City mint from 1536 till the 1733. They were later replaced by the machine struck milled pillar dollar which was first introduced in 1732. The Mexico mint was the first manufacture hand struck cobs initial being the pillars type cob (1536-1572) and concluding with the shield type cob (1572-1733).

In contrast to the other New World mints, the Mexico mint in no way created a pillars-and-waves cob, but did strike a fusion transitional "klippe" or "square-cut" type design in 1733 and 1734. The date was first appeared on Mexico cobs in 1607, but is rarely visible.

Pillar type cob coins were first introduced by Charles and Johanna, assayer G (Juan Gutierrez) in 1542. It was considered as an exceptional specimen noted for fine style and execution.
