The word embedding comes from the verb embed which refers to fix something firmly or deeply into a surrounding mass. Embed also means to enclose something firmly or snugly. When something is embedded it means it has become a part of the whole that surrounds it. In terms of biology the term enclose refers to attaching a specimen along with the material being submitted for a microscopic examination.

Embed can be defined as to implant or to sink and its synonyms include imbed, plant, engraft and implant. Other similar words include fix, fasten, ingrain, root, lodge, infix and entrench.

The word is commonly used when referring to journalist who are travelling and have become part of a military unit at the time of conflict.

Embedding is also a term found in mathematics referring to an instance of some mathematical object being contained in another; example is a subgroup existing within a group.
