In the western theory of music the term Cadence refers to a particular succession of intervals of chords that comes in the ending of a section, phrase or a piece of music. Cadence in Latin stands for cadentia which means "A Falling". A cadence in a song gives the phrase a distinctive ending. A cadence can designate to the listener that is the piece going to be concluded or continued further. Cadences are also termed as 'Weak' or 'Strong' depending on the impact they make in the song.

Although chords or melodic progressions specify a cadence, using these progressions does not actually state that the piece is a cadence. In a cadence there must actually be a sense of closure in the piece.
