I am 62 years old and it is my name.  Following WWII, my father, a US Army Officer,was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany in military government. My mother was very ill when I was born.  My dad found a Jewish baby nurse from a refugee camp to care for me.  She named me Kayla.  My family thought it was a made up name until I trained in college with a doctor who was also a Hebrew scholar.  He told me it was a very countrified and old fashioned European Jewish name that wasn't used anymore.  He told me that in Hebrew it meant "vessel" and like a chalice, not a  boat.  I liked that a chalice could hold something sacred like a child.  I never met anyone else with the name until a soap opera character was given the name and suddenly there were lots of little girls with the name.
