Kellie is an unusual spelling or variant of the very popular name Kelly, which was formerly a boy's name but is now more often given to girls.
In origin Kelly is an Irish name. It is an English version of an old Irish Gaelic name, Ceallach, a name sometimes given to early Christians as it is based on the word ceall, which means "monastery or church." It then became a surname O'Ceallaigh, which simply meant a descendant of a man called Ceallach.
Even today the name Kelly is strongly associated with Ireland, although it has now spread all over the English-speaking world and is particularly popular in Australia. Associations with an old Celtic word for warrior have also helped to make the name popular. Some modern names of uncertain origin, like, Kayley and Kylie, may have been influenced in their development by the popularity of this name too.

I hate that it became popular, as a girls name. I am 46, when I was in school there were 3 Kellys in my class and they were all male including myself.Since Grace Kelly made it popular amongst girls, when I tell people my name the first thing out of their mouth is " that's a girls name" I think I will start using my middle name Brian its just as good and I don.t know any girl named Brian:) But I still prefer it over my brothers name which is Kerry, lamo What was our parents thinking!!

I named my daughter Kelly, simply because I liked the name. The meaning fits her personality. I cannot remember exactly what I was thinking of for the other name, but it would have meant 'wild warrior woman.' Thank the good Lord, I did not name her that.
