Miriam is based on Miriam, the sister of Moses.  The Hebrew Translation is "Sea of Bitterness," and since Miriam was a Hebrew, that is the common translation.  But since Miriam was born in egypt, the name probably is derived from the Egyptian word "Myr" meaning "love."

You don't know how much I wish that the boy I love would say that, since my real name is Miriam.

Miriam is a name for girls. It is pronounced as MEER-ee-am. It is said to be a name that has originated from the Hebrew language. It is said to be a derivation of the Mary. It is name mentioned in the bible. This name was later revived in the 18th century. This name is very popular as a first name but very rare and uncommon as a surname. This word means rebellious owing to its biblical connections. It is also a word for bitter in the Hebrew language.

A prophetess and older sister of Moses were also known as Miriam. Miriam as per the bible is the sister of Moses who saved his life as a baby when she put him in a casket and hid him among the rushes to be found by the pharaoh's daughter. When translated into Greek it transforms into Mary which means Mother of Jesus.
