The word neuromuscular is defined as of, relating to or affecting both the nerves and muscles. In other words, it pertains to the nerves and the muscles they stimulate. It also refers to the interplay that takes place between the nerves and the muscles. Neuromuscular means anything that affects or is characteristic of both the neural and muscular tissue.

The word neuromuscular is closely associated with such phrases as neuromuscular junction, neuromuscular disorders, neuromuscular diagnostics, neuromuscular blockade, neuromuscular diseases, neuromuscular scoliosis, neuromuscular blockers and neuromuscular integrative action.

Some common examples of neuromuscular diseases are muscular dystrophy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is commonly known by its abbreviation ALS. Neuromuscular disorders include a variety of disorders, such as muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis and ataxia. These disorders lead to the degeneration and atrophy of the muscles and the nerve tissues. Neuromuscular disorders often result in abnormal muscle tone or spasticity.
