The name Jessica literally means, "he sees." It is usually pronounced Jess-a-kah and is of Hebrew origin. It is often said that it was first used by William Shakespeare in one of his best-known plays, 'The Merchant of Venice.'
It is believed that Shakespeare may have got the inspiration for the name 'Jessica' from names in the Bible. The names 'Iscah' and 'Jesca' are both referred to in the New Testament and many people believe they may have influenced the playwright to name Shylock's daughter in the play 'Jessica.' Therefore the actual origin of the name is not totally known, although it does appear for the first time in the play.
This name was really popular in the United States in the 1970s up until the late 1990s. By the time it reached the year 2006, it had fallen down the popularity list for girl's names - dropping to 32. Since then however it has continued to become more popular again across the world and in 2007 it was voted as the fifth most popular girl's name in the United Kingdom. In addition, in 2011 it is also featured in the top 10 popular girl names in Australia and New Zealand.
The name is shared by many famous faces including Jessica Biel, Jessica Lange and Jessica Simpson.

Jessica means it is a popular girls name which originates from the Hebrew meaning God's grace is with you, or God is watching.
There are some variations of the name, for example: Jessy, Jessie,Jessey and Jess,
They are all popular, and it is a feisty, lovely name, for someone with a lot of character and strength of purpose.
Jess or Jessie can often be used for a boys name, and we all know a Jess.
However Jessica is only used to name girls, although it is often shortened to Jess.

The name Jessica means universal or God sees. My dad said Jessica means "universal." I am so glad my name is Jessica, because it's simple, not jazzy, flashy, or whatever. But, the bad part is that there are so many people who is named Jessica. In all the schools I have been, there have been at least eight people named Jessica. One of them is also my friend, Jessica!(My teacher says Jessica can be a boy's name; I think this is true too!)

There seems to be no record of this name before Shakespeare used it for Shylock's daughter in "The Merchant of Venice," which was first performed in 1596. It is probably a mis-spelling, or perhaps a deliberate alteration, of Jesca, which was the spelling used in Shakespeare's day of Isca, a minor character in the Bible. The meaning of Isca is uncertain.

Shakespeare probably chose the name Jesca/ Isca as being typically Jewish, possibly altering the spelling to give the name a more Latin feel which his audience would be familiar with. The play may have given the name a certain popularity; Jessica is the daughter of a Jewish moneylender, and runs away from her father to marry a Christian. For whatever reason, in the 20th century the name became more widespread, and is currently very popular. Short forms include Jessie and Jess ( the latter has long been common in Scotland.)

This is a favorite of mine, and I had a Staffordshire terrier named Jess who I dearly loved, and she absolutely had God's grace.

The name JESSICA was first used by Shakespeare in his play 'The Merchant of Venice' (Jessica was Shylock's daughter) and is thought to be a variation on the Hebrew name ISCAH which means 'to behold' (ISCAH was the name of Abraham's niece).

JESSICA did not become a popular name until the 20th century.
