An English word comprises of three parts: the root, a prefix and a suffix. The root is the element of the word that contains the basic meaning of the word. A prefix is an element that is placed in front of a root. By virtue of a prefix, a new word is created or the meaning of the word is changed. Similarly, a suffix is a word element which is placed after the root. The suffix also changes the meaning of the word and its function. Some of the common suffixes used as "-ion," "-cide," "-hood," "-ic," "-ism," "-ous" etc.
