Dominique is mostly used as the feminine form of the name 'Dominic'. However, in its original French form, the name Dominique can actually be used as either a boy's or a girl's name, so of course it depends what culture you are from. If you are from the United Kingdom or the United States then the chances are you are male. From France, you will be of either gender.

The name actually derives from the Latin language. It comes from the late Latin name 'Dominicus', which is no longer used as a name in most cultures - though there are probably a few people out there with this name. Dominicus comes from the even older Latin word 'Dominus'. Dominus in Latin means Lord. Words in the English language like 'dominate' or 'dominant' derive from this word, too. So it seems to suggest some kind of power, which is of course one of the meanings of Dominque if we consider its Latin origin.

Dominic and Dominique have had a historical Christian significance, too, so it does indeed belong in a wide range of culture across the world. Roman Catholics in particular can be related to the word and the name, as 'Dominus' (or 'Lord') is still used within Latin Mass to this day.

Dominic is also spelled as Dominick, too, but this is quite rare.

You will find many answers on the Internet that refer to the meaning Dominique, too. Some people go by the generic meanings that are often attached to names. One of the generic meanings attached to Dominic or Dominique is actually 'gift from God' - but if you want a genuine and academic answer then you can be sure that the name derives from the word Lord. It suggests some kind of power and is a culturally and historically-rich name to have.

Dominique is usually the feminine form of Dominic, though in its original French it can be both a boy's and a girl's name. It derives from a late Latin name Dominicus (no longer in use) which itself comes from the older Latin word dominus ("lord.")
It is from this that we get words like dominate, dominant etc.

The names Dominic and Dominique have always tended to have a Christian significance, especially for Roman Catholics (the word dominus, "lord", is still used in the Latin Mass today.)

Dominic can also be spelled Dominick, although this is now very rare.

"Dominique" is a well known song in French by Soeur Sourire, who is regarded as the Singing Nun from Belgium. The song is based on Saint Dominic and his fight against the Albigensians. It became a global hit in the year 1963.

The lyrical nique in French is an obscenity for coitus and the song was practically unheard of in France, but made it to the number one position on the US Billboard Hot 100. The song was such a big hit that it prevented the song "Louie", "Louie" by the Kingsmen from going above the number two position.

It is renowned with some sarcasm that in the year 1963, while the FBI was trying ineffectively to decipher the wording of "Louie Louie", radio stations all over were airing a recording of the Singing Nun evidently vocalising the equivalent of a forbidden word, to little if any comment.
