The name Edgar is a name conferred upon a male. It is pronounced as Ed-gar. The name has an Old English origin. The words "ead" means "affluent" and "gar" means "spear" In other words, a powerful, wealthy spear means Edgar. It was the name of a Saxon king of Wessex who apparently was a saint too.

Edgar has as many as 10 variant names: Ed, Eddie, Teddie, Ted, Ned, Neddy, Eadgar, Eadger, Edgard, Edgardo. The last one is the Spanish form of the Old English popular name Edgar. Some of the famous names associated with Edgar are Poet Edgar Allan Poe, artists Edgar Rice Bourroughs and Edgar Degas. In Shakespeare's famous literary work King Lear, the king's son is called Edgar.

Like all the numerous "Ed" mames "Edward, Edwin etc) Edgar comes from the Old English word ead or "prosperity, riches." The rest is from gar, "spear." It is therefore quite a warlike name, though ironically its popularity in the early Middle Ages was partly due to the fame of a tenth-century English king known as Edgar the peaceful. In fact it would have been even better known as a royal name if it hadn't been for the Norman Conquest; Edgar was the name of the prince chosen to succeed King Harold in 1066, but was prevented by William of Normandy.

In the later 20th century the name Edgar became less common. It is still remembered as the name of two best-selling authors of the early 20th century, Edgar Rice Burroughs (creator of Tarzan) and Edgar Wallace, the detective novelist. In literature it is the name of major characters in Shakespeare's King Lear and Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights.

EDGAR is an acronym for Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis and Retrieval. It is a reporting system used by public companies and government organizations to transmit financial facts and figures to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the US government body to overlook the trade of securities and undertake investor protection. The activities which are undertaken by the public companies through the EDGAR method are automated collection, indexing, validation, receipt and forwarding of submissions of forms according to the provisions of the law.

There are some documents which are not yet permitted to be filed online, and so are not available online on EDGAR. As of November 2002, the SEC requires all foreign companies and governments to file their documents on EDGAR. Prior to this period, the electronic filing by foreign companies was purely voluntary. Annual reports given to shareholders (with the exception for mutual fund companies) are not to be submitted on EDGAR, though some of them do on a voluntary basis.
