The word thatched is an adjective. It is the adjective form of the word thatching. The word thatching is defined as the art or craft of covering a roof with materials that have been derived from natural sources (which are, in other words, known as vegetative materials). Some common examples of vegetative materials which are commonly used to cover roofs are straw, water reed, sedge, heather and rushes.

The word thatches is also defined as the stalks of plants which are used for roofing materials. Thatching is probably one of the oldest building materials known to mankind. Houses which have thatched roofs are common in developing countries, but they are used all over the world, particularly in those countries which have tropical and temperate climates.

The roof of a house which is made of thatched materials is known as a thatched roof. A house which has a thatched roof is known as a thatched cottage.
