SNMP is an acronym which popularly stands for Simple Network Management Protocol. Less commonly it may stand for Simple Network Monitoring Protocol. Informally, it may be humorously used to mean So/Security Not My Problem.
It makes up a fraction of the internet protocol suite, that is, as outlined by the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force). This protocol is employed by network management systems in order to keep a check on network-attached devices for such conditions that may warrant administrative attention. SNMP is made up of a particular set of standards needed for network management. This includes a database schema, an Application Layer protocol as well as a set of data objects.
