Tarmac is the short term of tarmacadam (Pronounced as:- Tarmac Adam); it is a type of a highway surface. Tarmac also refers to the material that was patented by E. Purnell Hooley in the year 1901. This term is also used with a variety of other materials which, also includes tar grouted macadam, and sometimes it is also used for the modern asphalt concrete. The ways to stabilize roads via the use of tar dates back almost to the year 1834, this method involved tar to be spread on the subgrade.

The patent which was earned by E. Purnell Hooley involved the mixing of tar mechanically and aggregating it prior to its lay down, later the tar was made compact and rolled over by a steam roller.
