An object such as a leaf, that is being observed, studied, tested, evaluated. A speciman can be almost any article that can be held or seen.

Simply put, a specimen means "a sample or an example." It is a representative or a part of things belonging to its class or category. In medical parlance, a specimen is a sample of blood, stool, urine or any other body fluid taken for diagnostic use. In biology, a specimen refers to a plant or an animal taken as a sample to study the property and characteristics of the entire lot of organisms belonging to the same species.

S The specimen can also be slang for a person. Here is an example: A specimen like him can be least expected to study for aeronautical engineering. Specimen is believed to have entered popular English literature for the first time in beginning of the 17th century.
