Pentecost is a word found in the book Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament section of the Christian Bible. Pentecost is derived from the Greek word for the number fifty. This is because Pentecost is celebrated an exact fifty days from the Passover. It was the end of the Old Testament feast of weeks.
Pentecost celebrates the infilling of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit was the comforter and counsellor whom Jesus promised to send to his bereft followers to guide them in his absence. According to the bible on the day of Pentecost the apostles were gathered together fervently engaged in prayer. Suddenly they heard a sound like a powerful wind and great tongues of fire settled on each of them. All the apostles began to speak in diverse languages which were incidentally the language of the spectators that had gathered.
Pentecost is called Whitsun Day in Britain. The week that commences with Whitsuntide of Whit Sunday, is referred to as Whitsun Week.
