A person who practises a learned vocation is known as practitioner. A commonly related phrase is the "medical practitioner" who is none but a doctor or someone specialising in the medicinal field. Such a person is known to have learnt the profession by being enrolled in a medical school and studying medicine. When he begins to put into practise the skills and the knowledge he had imbibed while learning the profession, he is known as a practitioner or more specifically, a medical practitioner.
The practitioner is required to learn and pick up every nuance and technique of the profession, vocation or the on-the-job training given to him. Practician is the synonym of the practitioner. The word entered popular English literature toward the latter half of the 14th century.
