The word 'monarchy' describes a system of governance in which the king or queen of the area is the prime ruler. One thing that is very important and should be kept into mind is that when you are using the word in this context you must add the article 'the' before the word. Following sentence can help you in understanding the word well: The uprising in Nepal against the monarchy was very vehement so the king had to shed his powers. The sentence mentioned above says that there was a rule of the king in Nepal but the opposition from people made it impossible for him to rule and he had to give up his powers.

The word can also be used for a state or province that is ruled by monarchy and also the king or queen and their family can be referred to as the monarchy.

Monarchy is also derivative from Greek. It refers to the rule or a form of government that has a Monarch as the ruler or the head of the state. The Monarchy usually reigns as the ruler or the head of the state for life. In a republican state, the ruler or the head is often elected for a period of time.

Presently there are exactly 29 sovereign monarchies in the world. Monarchy as a term is also used to refer to the people and the institutes that make up the imperial or the royal establishments or the kingdom over which the monarchy reigns. In the monarchies, most of them serve as the symbol of statehood and continuity. They are one of the oldest forms of government. The echoes in the leadership of the tribal chiefs are what represent Monarchy.
