The position of a gene or anonymous DNA sequence on a chromosome is known as locus. It refers to a specific location. Every gene belongs to a locus, but several genes can belong to the same locus. Each locus holds a gene for each trait from each parent. The use of locus is sometimes restricted to mean regions of DNA that are expressed.

The locus of a gene is designated by the chromosome number, its arm, and its place. Thus it is a kind of address for the gene. It is taken from a Latin word which means place. Loci are the plural form of locus. The order and genetic distances between loci in a chromosome is found out with the help of a linkage or a genetic map. Hence locus is any genomic site, whether functional or not, that can be mapped through formal genetic analysis.
