An irrational number is one that cannot be represented exactly by the ratio of two integers.

Square roots of numbers that are not perfect squares are all irrational, for example.

Irrational is an adjective that means an absence of reason or not being endowed by the same. It can also mean an affected state where there is an absence of normal or usual mental clarity. There is in irrationality a lack of accord with sound judgment or reason. Irrational can be found in the Greek and Latin as well and refers to a prosody which does not adjust or fit into the metric pattern due to its length. In Mathematics irrational is a term used to refer to irrational numbers.

Something that is Irrational can be defined as something that is senseless or illogical. The antonyms of the word are rational, reflective, sensible, stable, logical, reasonable etc.

"He tossed a coin into the air and made his decision on weather the result was heads or tails, his behaviour completely irrational". This is an example where the word irrational is being used in relation to one of its proper meanings.
