Ares is the ancient Greek God of war. The worship of Ares is believed to have originated in Thrace but he did not have an extensive following in the rest of ancient Greece then. He is believed to be the offspring of the Greek God Zeus and Goddess Hera. Later he was adapted as Mars into Roman culture. He is believed to be the God of mindless violence in warfare. He is often associated with Aphrodite who was his consort. He was an ancestral deity of the city of Thebes and was awarded a temple in Athens.
Even though Ares is seen or depicted as a God of war he's also shown as a coward who often complains to his mother Hera. His name is actually supposed to mean something like battle strife.
