Mimosa can refer to any of several mainly tropical herbs, shrubs and trees that fall under the genus Mimosa. This species is characterised as possessing globular headlike clusters of little flowers with projected stamens and compound leaves are usually susceptible or sensitive to any kind of feeling or touch or even light.

The family consists of 450 odd species which are all native to tropical regions in both the hemispheres. Majority of these plants grow in the form of herbs or shrubs, some develop into small sized trees. Varities of the plant are cultivated on a large scale owing to their lush foliage and their intriguing responsiveness to the slightest sensation. The leaves of some species fold in their leaflets when touched.

A mimosa is also a name of a drink that is made by mixing champagne with orange juice.
