Eclat refers to something noteworthy or brilliant. Anything which merits applause or a pat on the back is called éclat. However, one should understand that the result of the success should be there for all to see. In other words, glamorous success or a feat which gets noticed appeals for an éclat. The word comes from the old French word esclat.

Events like a victorious celebration or a win at a sport is worthy of an éclat. The next time you pop out that bottle of champagne for a victorious celebration, you should understand it is testimony to a performance worth an applause or éclat. Eclat can also mean "notorious or scandalous." For example, in a text of Pride and Prejudice, the word is used to denote disgrace.
