In its noun form a plough is a farm instrument. It has one or more sharp blades. It is used to loosen tight soil in order to make it conducive for planting seeds for growing crops. A plough is usually considered to be an evolved version of more rudimentary farming tools like the pick or the spade. Earlier ploughs used to be pulled by the farmers themselves and later cattle like oxen and horses were employed. Nowadays ploughs are pulled by tractors but some underdeveloped nations still use cattle.

In its verb form plough means to break or overturn the earth. It is usually done prior to planting seeds in order to grow a crop of some sort. Ploughing has multiple advantages. However it is done primarily to overturn the topmost layer of the soil. As a result the residue from the earlier crop enriches the soil. Moreover ploughing diminishes the possibility of weeds in the fields and makes the earth more porous.

The Americans spell plough as plow.
