A faying surface is defined as that surface of a member that is in contact with another member to which the faying surface is or to which it will be joined. It is a term that is commonly used in the field of resistance seam welding. Resistance seam welding is a process of resistance welding that produces a weld at the faying surfaces of parts that have been overlapped.

These parts are overlapped along the length of a joint. The weld is usually made by overlapping weld nuggets, a continuous weld nugget and also by forging the joint as it is heated. The weld is heated to the maximum welding temperature by resistance to the flow of the welding current.

A faying surface is defined as the surface of an object which comes into contact with the surface of another object to which it is joined or fastened. The term faying surface is commonly used in reference to plates, angle irons and other surfaces. These faying surfaces are riveted to each other in shipwork.
