Fictional is a literary term. It is the adjective form of the noun fiction. Fictional literature consists of books, novels, and stories which are fabricated. It therefore originates from the writer's imagination and may take inspiration from real life. It is the antonym of non fiction which basically consists mainly of factual claims about reality.

Fictional characters are those characters that feature in works of fiction. Fictional creatures are mythical or legendary creatures like the Loch Ness Monster for example. Fictional is also the name of a German musical work by the Gerrit Thomas.

The popularity of fiction can be attributed to many things. For one, fiction encompasses a wide range of human emotions. Secondly it is generally presented in a manner that is designed to give people a temporary break from reality. It also has the potential to make people happy, sad, empathize and fantasize among other things.
