It is a substance that increases the flow of urine. It deals with the secretion and discharge of urine. It is a drug. It is used during chemotherapy to dilute uric acid in time. Uric acid has a tendency to destroy cells which consequently leads to the formation of kidney stones or urinary tracts. It is also used to treat high blood pressure and fluid retention.

It removes excess water from the body. They are also known as water pills. It gives the impression of weight loss and fat but it is not so. But minerals and vitamins that are soluble in water might be lost due diuretic. Heart failure, liver cirrhosis, hypertension etc can also be treated with the assistance of diuretic. Caffeine, cranberry juice, yerba mate and alcohol are all types of weak diuretics.
