It's not surname.. Its SURNAME. There are three names for every person.. 1. First Name, 2. Middle name 3. Surname. First name is the name by the way people call you and middle name is the name by which your family is represented and Sur name is your family name. Suppose for eg.. Sam George Philip is the name of a person and you call the person by name Sam, then this will be your first name and George will be your middle name and Philip will be your Surname. In indian scenario, if you take a name like Adhi Venkatraman, then Adhi will be your first name and Venkatraman will be your surname. Another eg would be viz., Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan.. Here Vaidyanathan will be the first name and Kunnakudi will be the surname. Mostly in indian scenario there will be no middle name.. I have just answered your query relating to SURNAME . I don't know about MAYS..
Your surname is your last name, it should originate and be able to be traced back to your early relatives. Your surname is important for the fact that you can be recognised, without surnames it would be very confusing... Agreed? In a husband wife scenario the wife often takes her husbands name, I'm not sure why this is though? Or she can have two surnames, both hers and her husbands.
About your query with MAYS I think you might be able to find info on the world wide web, you may even find a family tree, even talk to your folks about your surname.
C you!
