The word 'courageous' is an adjective form of the noun 'courage'. A person who is propelled by a spirit of valour or grit against all odds is known to be courageous. Some of the related synonyms of the word 'courageous' are bold, fearless, gallant, undaunted, valiant, gutsy, heroic etc.

There is a subtle difference between brave and courageous, though both the words can be used in the same vein. A person who is courageous is spiritually strong. He has faith in his convictions. A person who is courageous is driven by the power to rise against injustice. Bravery is usually associated with physical courage. A person who is brave can use his physical resources to achieve his goals. For example, a revolutionary can use his gun and live by the sword to achieve his goals, but there can also be someone who uses the courageous Gandhian virtues (non-violence and truth) to achieve his purpose.
