Mainland is basically a continental portion of a particular area. The residents who live here are known as Mainlanders. However, the populations of the mainlanders are generally considered higher than the islanders. Some of the well known Mainlanders are Mainland China, as different to Taiwan, Mainland Australia, as different to Tasmania, Mainland Canada, as different to Newfoundland, Pelee Island or Vancouver Island, Mainland Finland, as opposite to Åland Islands, Mainland Japan and Honshū, as different to the remaining part of the Japanese islands, Mainland Portugal as different to Azores and Madeira Islands, British Mainland as different to the Channel Islands, to name a few.
